Welcome to the Sir Henry Cooper
Junior Masters Golf Championship web site.
Now in its second full year as an R&A Major, the entry list is
expected to continue to be of the highest quality, with players from
all over Europe coming to Nizels Golf & Country Club near Sevenoaks
in Kent for what is considered one of the very best Junior
Championships in the world.
Last year the handicap ballot was applied at 1.0 and 72 players
battled it out for supremacy in truly appalling weather. After a
dramatic playoff against Gary King (Tyrells Wood), Tom Lewis (Mid-Herts)
eventually donned the Champion’s Jacket, as well as capturing the
Under-16 Award, having shot a highly creditable 7-under par in
normal play.
The Junior Masters is famed for its
superb organisation and management, and its many similarities to a
European Tour event, with corporate hospitality, charity
junior-‘pro’/am, caddies, TV etc. There are usually upwards of 150
stewards on the course in their distinctive shirts to ensure smooth
progress, and up to six EGU Referees on hand to advise on rules.
The players are treated like professionals and are very well looked
after. All players receive a special bag tag at the start of day
one, and those who make the cut also receive a fully logo’d shirt to
wear during play and to keep afterwards. Titleist provide golf balls
to all players.
When Alan Cheeseman created the Junior Masters back in 1998 he could
only dream about future stars on the European Tour, but in 2007 Matt
Richardson, Yasin Ali, James Heath, Joost Luiten and Oliver Fisher
all played on the tour, having previously played the Junior Masters.
Then, in July, our 1999 Junior Masters Champion Zane Scotland
stunned everyone by qualifying for the French Open and then
finishing 12th! Only eight events later Zane had earned his card for
2008 – what a fantastic achievement! Zane finished 96th and Ollie
Fisher 102nd on the order of merit to earn their cards for 2008.
Congratulations to both of them.
Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters
Charitable Trust
So we start the new year planning the 2008 tournament whilst
enjoying watching past Masters making their way in the professional
game. It makes the effort and fund-raising by The Sir Henry Cooper
Junior Masters Charitable Trust all the more worthwhile. The Trust
has been established for over six years, is a registered charity,
and raises money to help deserving junior golfers pay for training
and travel.
