About the
Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters Golf Championship |
The
Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters Golf Championship was conceived in
1998 by Alan Cheeseman, who wanted to create a tournament for elite
junior players which provides, as far as possible, the excitement of
a European or US Tour event. |
His
vision was for a tournament which treated its young players as
though they were tour professionals, with their own car parking and
other on-course/clubhouse privileges, as well as being allowed
caddies (which was unheard of at the time) etc. |
He
also wanted the course to be dressed for the occasion, with
corporate hospitality marquees, tented village, live electronic
leader-boards, giant scoreboards, and so on. |
Sponsors were recruited and Sir Henry Cooper was invited, and
agreed, to become the Patron. |
With
the Junior Masters now being an official R&A Major, and one of only
two independent Great Britain and Ireland Boys qualifying events,
the handicap limit for applications is 3.0 exact. The handicap
ballot usually falls at about 1.0. The tournament is played over two
days (72 holes) with the top 36 (plus ties) making the cut on
Saturday evening. |
All
players receive a number of gifts before play, including a special
bag-tag and ProV1 golf balls from Titleist (who also conduct
the official equipment count). The players who make the cut also
receive a fully logo’d golf shirt to wear on the Sunday. |
The
competitors get their lunch and tea free of charge. The top 10
players receive trophies and valuable prizes, and the Champion also
receives the Junior Masters Jacket to keep. |
During the weekend there are upwards of 180 stewards, scorekeepers,
ball spotters etc on the course, together with four EGU referees.
England and GB&I boys selectors will also be keeping an eye open for
emerging, as well as established, talent. |
Sky
Sports usually feature highlights during the following week. |
Unlike any other UK junior championship, the Junior Masters features
a Junior-‘Pro’/Am as a curtain-raiser on the Friday where the
juniors are the ‘pros’ for the day, playing off scratch for their
own prizes. They are accompanied by three amateurs playing a team
competition as part of the international UBS Trophy. |
This
part of the weekend raises funds for the Sir Henry Cooper Junior
Masters Charitable Trust, a charity which awards bursaries to
promising junior golfers. |
Before lunch everyone is treated to entertainment such as a
fantastic display of trick shots by Jeremy Dale, and following lunch
in the marquee, all are entertained by a comedian. |
